Chapter One: Before They Were Named

The Paladin & The Pixie

Chapter One: Before They Were Named

There is a common belief that everything in this world is made to fill a gap—that what we create exists to complete what is missing. It is an easy idea to accept, comforting in its simplicity.

It is also not entirely true.

Long before their names were ever spoken, before their paths so much as brushed against one another, the world moved as it always had—steady in some places, restless in others. There were hands that shaped with purpose, and hands that gathered with wonder. And though they worked differently, neither was lost, nor searching to be made whole.

Each moved with certainty. Not loudly, not declared, but known.

There are those who build with care, who understand that strength is not force, but restraint—that what endures is not what is rushed into being, but what is shaped slowly, with patience and intention. And there are those who see the world in layers, who recognize that meaning is not fixed, but something that can be shifted, expanded, and reimagined when the right elements are brought together.

These ways are not the same. They were never meant to be.

And for a time, they existed as all things do—separately, fully, without question.

Until something quieter than a call, and gentler than a need, began to settle into the spaces between. Not a pull that demanded, but an awareness that simply… existed. The understanding that there are other ways of seeing the world—and that when those ways cross, something shifts.

Not because something was missing.

But because something was recognized.

And the world, as it often does, made room.
